after you've soaked and towel-squished yarn you should whack it all along the length of the skein (can do for all fibres, not just sheep). this makes it smoother. after it's dried you can repeat wash-whack for extra smoothness. some people still like to steam the yarn after it's wash-whack-dried.

you shouldn't weight knitting yarns as they dry. weighting yarns makes them stretch and is designed for weaving yarns which are then expected to shrink up in the final finishing.
